The studio exists because most reference available to artists is incidental — photographs taken for some other purpose that happen to contain a figure. That leaves you fighting the source material: the light is wrong, the crop cuts the hands, there is exactly one angle and it is not the one you need. Reference shot deliberately for drawing solves a different problem than reference borrowed from stock photography.
So each set is planned around what an artist actually does with it. Poses are held and shot from multiple angles so a figure can be rotated in your head. Lighting is chosen to describe form rather than to flatter. Resolution is high enough that zooming into a shoulder or a hand still shows anatomy instead of compression artefacts.
