Timeless Grace

Timeless Grace is figure reference in the classical register: quiet, held, composed. Poses with no drama to hide behind, made for sustained study of contrapposto, the long line and the shapes between the limbs.

There is a reason the same handful of standing poses recur from Greek marble through the academies to the modern atelier. A composed figure, weight on one leg, is a complete lesson in structure with nothing added for effect. Timeless Grace is figure reference in that tradition. What's in this pack

Held, composed poses in a classical register. Nothing dynamic and nothing shouting — the interest is poise, balance and line. Sets like this are built for the long study rather than the quick one, and they reward being drawn slowly. What you'll practice

Contrapposto. The oldest device in figure art and still the most useful. One leg accepts the weight, the pelvis rises on that side, the shoulder line answers by tilting against it, and the spine curves to keep the head over the supporting foot. Once you can find that chain in any standing figure, standing figures stop being difficult.

The long line. A single rhythm running from the ear, down through the ribcage and hip, into the supporting leg. Find it first, in one gesture, and the anatomy afterwards has something to hang from. Miss it and the drawing becomes a collection of correct parts.

Negative space. In a quiet pose, the shapes between the arm and the waist, or between the legs, do a great deal of the design work. They are also easier to judge accurately than the positive forms, which makes them a reliable way to catch your own errors.
