Fabric hides the information you most need. It disguises where the ribcage ends and the pelvis begins, it softens the joints, and it lets you fake a proportion that is wrong. Working from the nude figure removes the excuse. You can see the landmarks — the pit of the neck, the bottom of the ribcage, the crest of the hip, the knee and ankle — and once you can find those on reference, you can place them from memory on a clothed figure, a character design or a creature that has never existed. What you'll practice Sighting and measuring: comparing head lengths against the whole figure, checking one limb against another, catching an error before it is three layers deep in a drawing. The ribcage-to-pelvis relationship, which is the single most useful simplification in figure drawing. Two masses, a flexible column between them, and everything else attached. Joint placement, particularly the elbow and knee, which are where an unmeasured drawing tends to go visibly wrong. Contour that describes form rather than tracing an edge — reading where the surface turns away from you instead of where it stops.
