Drawn clothing is where a lot of otherwise-strong figures fall apart — folds that look like random scribbles or stiff tubes. But drapery isn't chaos; it follows physics. Learn the rules and cloth becomes one of the most satisfying things to draw.
All drapery is gravity and tension fighting over fabric. Gravity pulls cloth straight down into hanging folds. Tension pulls it between two anchor points — a shoulder and an elbow, a belt and a knee. Identify the anchor points and the pull directions first, and the folds stop being mysterious.
Pipe folds: hanging cylinders, like a curtain or a cloak from the shoulders.
Diaper folds: fabric draped between two points, sagging in the middle (think a sash, or cloth over a forearm).
Zigzag folds: the sharp, angular folds behind a bent joint — inside the elbow, behind the knee.
Spiral folds: cloth wrapping a cylinder, like a sleeve around an arm.
Most clothing is a combination of these few types. Once you can name them, you can construct them.
Material changes everything. Heavy fabric — velvet, leather, wool, a gothic cloak — falls in few, large, soft folds. Light fabric — silk, chiffon — breaks into many small, sharp folds. Match the fold frequency to the weight or the material reads wrong.
Invented folds almost always look like tubes because the brain oversimplifies. Studying how cloth actually behaves on a posed figure is the fix. Take one reference and draw only the fold structure — no figure, just the lines of the cloth and the anchor points driving them. Then add a simple two-value light to show how the folds catch light.
