Female Pose Reference: What to Study and How to Practise

How to read and use female pose reference for figure drawing: pelvis tilt, contrapposto, weight and proportion, plus a 20-minute timed pose drill.

Good female pose reference shows you three things clearly: a wider, more tilted pelvis, a shoulder line about as wide as the hips or narrower, and where the weight sits. Check those three on every photo before you look at any detail. Then use short timed poses so the figures you draw stay loose and natural.

What makes a female figure read as female in a pose?

The pelvis does most of the work. The angle under the pubic bones is about 70 degrees in men and 90 to 100 degrees in women ( Wikipedia: Pelvis ), so the female pelvis is broader. On paper the hips read as wide as the shoulders or wider, and the torso looks less like a wedge.

Before you add a single curve, draw a line across the shoulders and one across the hips and compare their lengths. Our female anatomy reference guide covers the bones and muscles underneath.

How does contrapposto change a standing female pose?

Contrapposto is a standing pose with most of the weight on one leg, so the shoulders and arms turn off-axis from the hips and legs ( Wikipedia: Contrapposto ). The leg carrying the weight is called the engaged leg and the relaxed one is the free leg. Hip and shoulder lines tilt in opposite directions.

On every photo, find the engaged leg first, then check which side of the hip line is higher and how the shoulder line tilts the other way. Both lines level means a stiff pose. Our sitting and standing pose reference guide covers weight shift in more poses.

Which female poses should you collect first?

Collect six pose families before anything else: standing with a weight shift, walking, seated on a chair, seated on the floor, reaching or lifting, and one action pose such as running or jumping. Gather 10 to 20 photos per family instead of hundreds of random images.

Choose reference where the clothes follow the body, such as leggings or dance wear: they show the pelvis tilt, the spine and the weight, which is all a pose study needs. For action poses, see drawing dynamic action poses .

How long should you spend on each female pose?

Gesture drawings in a life session run from about 10 seconds to 5 minutes per pose ( Wikipedia: Gesture drawing ). Start with 30-second poses to catch the line of action, move to 2-minute poses for the hip and shoulder tilt, and finish with one longer pose for proportion.

Our explainer on what gesture drawing is covers the method.
