Drawing plus-size figures: weight, volume, and why your references matter

Ask an artist to draw a plus-size figure and you will usually get one of two failures. Either a standard figure inflated evenly, like a balloon — same proportions, just wider — or a stack of clichés: a circle for a belly, bracket lines for folds, all softness and no structure. Both failures have the same root cause: most of us learned the figure from libraries that contain exactly one body type, so fuller bodies get invented instead of observed.

The skeleton doesn't change — hang everything off it

Height, bone length, the ribcage-and-pelvis relationship, where joints sit — none of this varies with body fat. That is the single most useful fact in this topic. A fuller figure is not a different construction; it is the same construction carrying more soft tissue in body-specific places. Where beginners go wrong is skipping that step because "it won't show anyway." It shows more, not less: on a fuller body the landmarks that remain visible — clavicles, elbows, the ulna edge, knees, the shin — are doing all the structural storytelling, so misplacing them is instantly readable as wrong.

Where weight actually goes

Soft tissue is not distributed evenly, and it is not random. It accumulates in patterns — and the pattern is part of what makes a specific body look like a specific person rather than a template:

The torso leads. Belly, hips, chest and upper back carry most of the change. The belly is not a circle stuck on the front — it is a mass with weight, hanging and resting on the pelvis, with a distinct top plane and underside.

Limbs taper. Upper arms and thighs gain much more than forearms, wrists, calves and ankles. That taper — full upper segment, comparatively slim lower segment — is one of the most recognisable truths of fuller bodies, and evenly-inflated figures miss it completely.

Joints stay articulate. Wrists, knees and ankles remain relatively defined. Keeping them readable keeps the figure feeling capable and alive instead of soft everywhere.
